A Greener Kind of Density

The Rockefellerstraße housing estate is being transformed into a greener, more closely connected neighbourhood with room for more homes. The new layout preserves the defining features of the existing estate, adding timber-hybrid buildings of varying heights that largely follow the positions of the original buildings. Gabled roofs create a dialogue between old and new, while buildings with external access galleries shelter the residential courtyards from the streets. A continuous green corridor stretches from Rockefellerstraße in the south to the Panzerwiese in the north. Accessible paths weave together play areas, places to gather and natural open spaces. Sheltered courtyards and safe routes create a welcoming setting for everyday life, with greenery close at hand. Three shared neighbourhood parking  garages, timber-hybrid construction and biodiverse green roofs form part of a coherent sustainability strategy. Rainwater management follows sponge-city principles, retaining water locally to support planting and ease pressure on drainage systems
